UNWTO Activities in Asia Pacific, World´s Fastest Tourism Growth Region
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is undertaking a broad-ranging programme of activities designed to help the Asia-Pacific region, especially its emerging destinations, cope with record increases in visitor arrivals projected for this year.
International tourism off to a strong start in 2012

International tourist arrivals worldwide grew by 5.7% in the first two months of 2012. Demand remained strong in both advanced and emerging economy destinations, despite economic constraints in many of the source markets of Europe and North America.

International tourism receipts surpass US$ 1 trillion in 2011

In 2011, international tourism receipts exceeded US$ 1 trillion for the first time, up from US$ 928 billion in 2010. In real terms, receipts grew by 3.8%, following a 4.6% increase in international tourist arrivals. An additional US$ 196 billion in receipts from international passenger transport brought total exports generated by international tourism in 2011 to US$ 1.2 trillion.

Under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development”, WTD 2012 highlights the need to bring the tourism sector and energy stakeholders closer together to spur tourism’s contribution to sustainability.

UNWTO High-level Regional Conference on Green Tourism

The World Tourism Organization is organising the UNWTO High-level Regional Conference on Green Tourism in conjunction with the 24th Joint Commission Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for South Asia and the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific, in order to introduce the main findings of the recent UN research on tourism as a green economy sector and highlight the main challenges and opportunities facing the public and private sector.

International tourism to reach one billion in 2012

International tourist arrivals grew by over 4% in 2011 to 980 million, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. With growth expected to continue in 2012, at a somewhat slower rate, international tourist arrivals are on track to reach the milestone one billion mark later this year.

UN comes together to promote tourism for development

Tourism has been identified by more than half of the world’s poorest countries as an effective means to take part in the global economy and reduce poverty. To maximize tourism’s role in helping countries reach their development goals, UNWTO has come together with seven UN agencies and programmes to boost tourism as an instrument for development.
