- On 31 December 2020, People's Committee of Hanoi City held a meeting on the implementation results of the tourism industry in 2020, orientation of tasks and solutions in 2021 and the period of 2021-2025. VNAT’s Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh attended at the meeting.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Nguyen Manh Quyen - Vice Chairman of People's Committee of Hanoi City; Mr. Tran Trung Hieu - Deputy Director of Hanoi Tourism Department; leaders of departments under the VNAT; officials of the Hanoi Tourism Department and representatives of Hanoi municipal departments.

At the meeting, Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh highly appreciated the results of the Ha Noi tourism industry achieved in recent years. Along with the growth of Viet Nam tourism, the number of tourists to Hanoi has steadily increased over the years and fulfilled the targets set by the industry. Ha Noi has always affirmed its position as the leading attractive destination, the gateway of international visitors to Viet Nam, as well as an important source market for domestic visitors of other local destinations in the country.

However, in 2020, the outbreak of Covid-19 disease has seriously impacted on global tourism in general and Viet Nam tourism industry in particular. The Chairman said that international visitors to Viet Nam only reached about 3.7 million arrivals, a decrease of 79.5% compared to 2019; domestic visitors reached 56 million, down 34.1%; total tourism receipts reached VND 312,000 billion, down about 58.7%.

In order to fulfill the dual task of preventing Covid-19 and promoting tourism activities, the industry has actively adjusted plans, focusing on implementing the domestic tourism demand stimulus program. The program received a strong response from provinces, cities, tourism associations and businesses across the country. In particular, many alliances and linkages for tourism development among provinces and cities have been formed, notably the cooperation between the two biggest tourist hubs of Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City with other localities.

The Chairman said that in 2021, the tourism industry is oriented to continue exploiting the domestic tourism market, focusing on enhancing linkages between localities, businesses and media, as well as promoting investment, developing new tourism products; preparing plans for welcoming back international visitors after the Covid-19 pandemic was controlled globally. Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh hoped the whole tourism industry to push efforts to innovate, take more drastically and effectively activities to recover tourism.

Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh emphasized, this is the most difficult time in the industry’s history, requiring high effort to overcome. Hanoi should continue asserting the leading role as the tourism center of the country, promoting the achievements in the 2016-2020 period, continuing to implement the dual task of preventing epidemics and stimulating domestic tourism; actively connect with other localities in the country in order to increase the flow of tourists, contributing to the overall growth of the tourism industry; research and develop new tourism products, restructure the tourist markets in a sustainable direction, suitable to the new situation.

In addition, to further stimulating domestic demand, the Chairman suggested Ha Noi to be prepared for the international tourism market as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic is controlled; continue to carry out media campaigns that have been very prominent recently, including promoting Ha Noi and Viet Nam on CNN. In addition, it is necessary to continue pushing digital transformation and information technology application in the tourism industry.

The Chairman also proposed the People's Committee of Hanoi to release specific supports for tourism businesses and accommodation establishments that are severely affected due to the impact of Covid-19.

Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh affirmed that the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism is always ready to accompany with localities, especially Hanoi City in tourism development, prevention of epidemics, as well as promotion of  domestic tourism demand.
