Strengthen cooperation and exchange of tourists between Vietnam and the U.S.

- On 29th March 2022, in Ha Noi, Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) had courtesy meeting with Mr. Doron Bard - Head of Visa Coordinator, The U.S. Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City, to strengthen tourism cooperation between Vietnam and the US in the near future.

At the meeting, the two sides discussed the situation of exchange and cooperation in the field of tourism between Vietnam and the US in recent years. Accordingly, before the pandemic outbreak, the number of American visitors to Vietnam was always in the top of 5 largest tourist markets of Vietnamese tourism. In 2019, the number of American visitors to Vietnam increased by 8.6% and the number of Vietnamese visitors to the US increased by 8.4% compared to 2018.

Vietnam and America operated direct flights from November 2021, connecting major cities of the two countries, Ho Chi Minh City and San Francisco.

Regarding the promotion of tourism, on Vietnam side, a number of activities have been implemented such as organise the introduction of destinations of Vietnam in the US (2019); Appointing Mr. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Hollywood film director as Ambassador of Vietnam tourism in the US market (term of 2017-2020); Organise a campaign to introduce and promote Vietnam tourism; Coordinate with American media agencies (CNN, CNBC, Google, Youtube, etc.) to convey the message of a safe, beautiful, and friendly Vietnamese destination for American visitors as well as the global public. Previously, the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism licensed Netflix to film the feature film "A Tourist's Guide to Love" in Vietnam.

Additionally, Mr. Ha Van Sieu was glad to inform that Vietnam has officially reopened international tourism from 15th March 2022 and restored the policies on entry visas for foreigners as before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Affirming the U.S as one of the most important and potential tourist markets of Vietnam, Mr. Sieu expressed the hope after reopening international tourism, longing for the exchange of tourists between two countries will be growing in the near future.

Also at the meeting, the two sides discussed some contents related to the facilitation of travel and tourism for tourists from the two countries in the new normal context. Mr. Doron Bard said, Vietnam is also a potential market that America aims for. According to a recent report, the number of students from Vietnam to the US to study abroad is quite large and makes a significant contribution to the US economy. Mr. Ha Van Sieu also noted a number of the US proposals on visa policy and affirmed that he would discuss with relevant agencies to propose to the competent authorities.

On this occasion, Mr. Sieu invited Mr. Doron Bard and representatives of The U.S. Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City to attend the event in introducing Vietnam tourism to the US caravan, which is expected to take place at the end of this year. This is a large-scale event and is expected to be a lever to create a breakthrough in the number of American visitors to Vietnam in the upcoming time.

Expressing agreement with VNAT’s Vice Chairman Ha Van Sieu, Mr. Doron Bard affirmed that the US Embassy and Consulate General will continue to be the bridge to introduce US partners, businesses and investors to Vietnam to cooperate, invest, do business as well as support Vietnam tourism in promotion activities in the US.
