Guidelines for the Development of English Teaching Curricula based on the TOEIC Benchmark

Followed by the dissemination of the set of Manuals on the Vietnam Tourism Occupational Skill Standards (VTOS), the Environmentally and Socially Responsible Tourism Capacity Development Programme would like to introduce the Guidelines for the Development of English Teaching Curricula. The Guidelines are designed for tourism-training institutions, which were developed within the framework of the EU-funded Project for Vietnam Human Resources Development in Tourism (HRDT Project) during 2004-2010.

The publication of these Guidelines is aimed at supporting the application of English benchmarks to various tourism services in Vietnam by VTOS, and is considered as the 14th of VTOS standards. The English benchmark is set in compliance with the TOEIC benchmark (Test of English for International Communication) and has been approved by VNAT to be recognized throughout Vietnam as an acceptable benchmark of English communication fluency and capability for the tourism industry.

The English benchmark is a tool to assess the English language, however at the same time, it is a method designed to improve the English proficiency of employees in the tourism industry to be on par with the international standard. With reference to the Guidelines, Vietnam’s tourism-training institutions are able to adjust their syllabi to meet the requirements of the tourism industry and provide students with adequate benchmark information for their English-learning requirements as appropriate to their own career orientation.

The English benchmark has been completed for 6 tourism occupations in the VTOS system, including Food and Beverage Service, Front Office, Housekeeping, Hotel Security, Tour Guiding and Tour Operations. The material and syllabi of the English benchmark cover travel enterprises, hotels rating from 3 stars and above, and tourism-training institutions.
