Promoting Sustainable Tourism Initiatives and Locally-Made Products

The joint workshop on “Promoting Sustainable Tourism Initiatives and Locally-Made Products” was organized by Quang Nam Provincial People’s Committee and the three UN Agencies; UNESCO, ILO and FAO on 22-23rd November 2012 in Hoi An city.

The workshop’s aim was to create synergies among UN supported projects across tourism as well as tourism-related industries located in Quang Nam province. ESRT Tourism Sector Specialist, Kai Partale introduced the ESRT programme and potential support for Tourism Information Centers (TIC). TICs take over a central role within the tourism service chain where often the first encounter takes place a tourist experiences with a destination, providing information on the site/ the region and selling tickets.

In terms of Responsible Tourism, whose products cater for both tourists and the host community, TICs take on the role of an active contributor of Responsible Tourism by promotion, raising of awareness and by creating real, positive impacts for the destination’s social economic development. TICs should function even more than only an information and ticket office, but will also serve as sales outlet for locally produced products/crafts. Research showed that those tourists who visit a TIC stay longer in the region and visit also more attractions.

As a result, the workshop presented newly developed products and examined concrete actions supporting market reach which included identification of joint-branding opportunities and sales/promotional channels such as tourism information centers.
