EU MCST cooperation in the field of sustainable tourism

Hanoi 13th Nov. 2013, Today at the Ministry of Cultures, Sports and Tourism, the Vice-President Antonio Tajani, European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry will meet with Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh to examine ways of strengthening relations and cooperation in the field of sustainable tourism. This is as part of the EU’s efforts to deepen economic relations with countries in the dynamic ASEAN region,

On the 13th November, Vice President Tajani will meet with Mr. Hoang Tuan Anh, Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism to sign a letter of intent to examine ways of strengthening relations and cooperation in the field of sustainable tourism. Its aim is for the EU and Vietnam to work jointly towards:

·         The establishment of a periodic dialogue and exchange of information on respective initiatives in the field of tourism, to ensure the development of sustainability and competitiveness in tourism

·         The exchange of good practices in the development of sustainable tourism among tourism authorities and main stakeholders, including the academic world, notably in the fields of natural and cultural heritage preservation and promotion, small and medium-size enterprises, training and skills, and the improvement of tourism services quality.

The rapid development of Vietnam’s tourism sector with a recent increase of 10.4 % and over 6 million foreign visitors until Oct 2013 has brought substantial socio-economic developments to the citizens of Vietnam and established Vietnam as a well-recognized and important tourism destination. In order to ensure continued growth and benefits to the people into the future, the sector must now focus on being sustainable.

To help achieve this, the European Union is supporting the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vietnam National Administration of Tourism through the Environmentally and Socially Responsible Tourism Capacity Development Programme (ESRT) from 2011 to 2015. It aims to build capacities and strengthen the foundation of the Vietnamese Tourism Sector for Socially and environmentally responsible and inclusive growth,

Given the long-standing successful development cooperation and support of the European Union in Tourism Human Resource Development and promotion of Responsible Tourism in Viet Nam, the Minister also presents its recognition and appreciation to EU support by presenting the Medal for Cooperation Development to the Ambassador, Head of Delegation, Mr. Franz JESSEN.   

The events will be attended by representatives from EU industry associations and companies as well as high level representatives from the Vietnam Tourism government and industry.
