Training Workshop For Tourism Master Trainers In Ho Chi Minh City

Over the period May 31st to June 8th, 2014, the ESRT Programme delivered two training workshops for Vietnam Tourism Occupational Standards (VTOS) Master Trainers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. 37 VTOS trainers were carefully selected using best practice criteria to participate in these training workshops.

This activity is a part of the VTOS Trainers Development Programme which has been delivered along with the new VTOS system version 2013 as part of the ESRT Programme. The training programme not only introduces the new VTOS standards and how to apply them in training activities but it also introduces the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Tourism Professionals (MRA-TP), which aims at establishing  common competency standards for tourism and hospitality professionals thus facilitating the mobility and transfer of human resources in the region. The training programme is focused on providing trainers with guidance of lessons development, training methods and skills in accordance with new VTOS.

The international trainer of these training workshops, Mr. Chris Benke, directly participated in developing the VTOS versions (2007 and 2013). Moreover, he was a key trainer of both the Trainers Development Programme and the VTOS Assessors Development Programme which was implemented by the EU funded Vietnam Human Resources Development in Tourism Project (2005-2010).

The master Trainers who participated in the two training workshops will be assessed and screened as part of the ESRT Programme based on a selection process using a world class set of competencies. Following a select group of master Trainers will be selected to implement 30 workshops on VTOS dissemination, ten training courses on new VTOS trainers, 20 training workshops for old VTOS trainers. It is expected there will be excess of 800 tourism trainers being trained and retrained on training skills.

Speaking at the final Master Training programme Mr. Benke stated “Vietnam’s hotel and tourism sector is rapidly expanding and the VTOS will play a critical role in the provision of skilled professionals for positions in the tourism industry.” He also added, “It is important that the hotel and restaurant industry partnership with the training centres to ensure that training of all students is meeting the demanding needs of tourism businesses”.
