The newly-operated highway Hanoi - Lao Cai is of vital importance in economic and tourism development in the crossing areas. Accordingly the travelling time from Hanoi to Lao Cai is reduced by a half, resulting in the skyrocket of tourist arrivals to related provinces of Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Lao Cai (especially in holidays, new year, weekends).
However, it also brought back many difficulties and challenges such as over-crowds, increase of the service price, environmental hygiene, local traffic congestion, danger of loss of cultural identity of ethnic minorities … In order to tackle with such a situation, localities must cooperate to implement many solutions in parallel, in which creation of an unique product chain, promotion of tourism development in neighboring areas to reduce the pressure on major tourism destinations where the highway passes through are extremely necessary.
ESRT Programme Director Vu Quoc Tri told at the worshop: “One of the ESRT Programme’s activities over the past time is to support and collaborate with the North West Provinces to expand a specific product framework toward a sustainable development. Since early 2015, ESRT experts have closely worked with representatives of the 3 provinces of Phu Tho, Yen Bai and Lao Cai, which are most affected by the new highway, to develop a tourism product framework along the highway Hanoi - Lao Cai. The workshop is aimed to gather dedicated comments of experts, managers and tourism businesses in order to adjust and supplement the product framework. Upon the completion of such a product framework, the ESRT Programme will hand-over it to the related provinces.
The workshop reviewed the effect of the new highway to travel agencies and localities located along the highway, introduced the tourism development tendency in Sapa, classified clutches of tourism products along the highway, analysed the inconsistence in tourism products; at the same time proposals and action plans for product development, marketing, capacity building, support for tourism development in areas along the highway… have also been recommended. Delegates also discussed to complete and certify the tourism map as well as update the tourism website for the 8 North West provinces, including additional e-marketing tools.
Taking this opportunity, the ESRT Programme handed over the results of the tourist survey to Sapa implemented by the ESRT Programme in support to the DCST of Lao Cai Province. This is believed the useful document that Lao Cai tourism can take a reference while assessing tourism activities and outlining a development strategy in the coming time.
